Gary Shaffer, CEO, Tulsa City-County Library

“With the assistance of our OrangeBoy analyst, my team was able to pull data easily to meet a tight proposal deadline and ultimately secure a seven-figure gift from a local foundation.”

The Tulsa City-County Library (TCCL) is in the midst of a nearly $48 million renovation project for the Central library and had an opportunity to secure a seven-figure gift from a local foundation. The funder asked the library to demonstrate the reach Central Library has throughout the county even though it is located downtown.

Working with OrangeBoy and its Savannah software suite, TCCL was able to pull data from its Performance Dashboard and Query Builder to generate a list of customers who had used Central Library in the previous year. Customers were quantified and displayed on a map to illustrate that people throughout the county were indeed using Central Library. These materials were incorporated into the funding proposal; and consequently, the library was successful in securing a major funder for this renovation.

“It was important to our funder that the Central Library serve a wide audience, not just people who live or work downtown,” said Gary Shaffer, Tulsa City-County Library CEO. “With the assistance of our OrangeBoy analyst, my team was able to pull data easily to meet a tight proposal deadline and ultimately secure the funding. We are thrilled to work with OrangeBoy to have easy and meaningful access to customer information. Services like these help us demonstrate our importance in the community and fulfill our brand promise, ‘Libraries Change Lives.’ ”

Jim Staley, Marketing and Communications Director, Mid-Continent Public Library

“The result of findings using Savannah’s Query Builder feature led to a new, larger library location in Grain Valley with dedicated programming space, more computers and an expanded children’s area.”

Amidst its planning stages for a new Grain Valley library location, Mid-Continent Public Library (“the Library”) sought a deeper understanding of its customers. The Library worked with OrangeBoy to determine that the largest, most active customer clusters were the Early and Often (customers circulating juvenile and adult print materials) and Point and Click (customer who use library computers).

Using intelligence from Savannah, Mid-Continent Public Library discovered that parents in the Grain Valley community were using neighboring branch locations. “By using the Query Builder feature, we discovered that only half of our local customers were using Grain Valley – the other half were using neighboring and larger branches as their primary library location. A significant percentage of these users were parents with children, suggesting that parents saw the children’s area in Grain Valley as inadequate,” says Marketing and Communications Director Jim Staley.

The result of these findings led to a new, larger library location with dedicated programming space, more computers and an expanded children’s area. This was done in a direct effort to create a more desirable destination for parents closer to their homes.

Kimber Fender, Eva Jane Romaine Coombe Director, Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County

“We are very excited [to have received the 2013 National Medal for Museum and Library Services, considered the ‘nation’s highest honor conferred on museums and libraries for service to the community’] and think it is due in part to the excellent strategic plan and ongoing measurement we were able to develop with OrangeBoy’s assistance.”

The Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County is dedicated to using data-driven techniques to serve its community. The Library has worked with OrangeBoy for more than four years, starting with a customer and market segmentation study to provide insight for its strategic plan. More recently, OrangeBoy developed the Library’s Performance Dashboard to measure its strategic plan and make decisions at the branch and system levels.

The Library monitors a variety of activities on the site, including usage of its Child-Only and Teen-Only cards. These card types allow children and teens the opportunity to have limited borrowing privileges with their own Library card that does not require parental signature and accrues no late fees.

The Performance Dashboard became especially important when the Library sought a renewal levy in 2013. The Library’s confidence was bolstered with knowledge from the market penetration metric that showed 88 percent of the households in the county have Library cards. The levy was successful with an 81 percent passage rate, the highest among several Ohio Library levy campaigns during the same election.

The Library’s efforts have not gone unnoticed in the Library community. It was honored with the 2013 National Medal for Museum and Library Services, considered the ‘nation’s highest honor conferred on museums and libraries for service to the community.’ Kimber Fender, The Eva Jane Romaine Coombe Director of the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, shared her views about the award. “We are very excited and think it is due in part to the excellent strategic plan and ongoing measurement we were able to develop with OrangeBoy’s assistance.”
